A Message to Divorcing Parents

Dear Parents,

My parents split up when I was 8, about the same time this photo was taken outside our house in Montgomery County, Maryland.

They divorced 7 years later in 1973.

Those years were some of the most difficult of my life. When you’re a kid, you’re very sensitive to the feelings of grownups around you. I can still remember Dad’s frustration and Mom’s shame. During those years, everyone in our family behaved in ways that we’re not real proud of.

Today, I live in Chester County and I’m proud to tell you that I’ve made a full recovery from my parent’s divorce. I am very grateful for the healing help I’ve received over the years. One of the best bits of advice someone gave me was to advance my own recovery by reaching out to strengthen other children of divorced parents. That’s why I’ve joined forces with Family Service of Chester County—a well-established organization with deep roots in our community—to bring you these books.

We have reviewed each book carefully and can recommend them with confidence. Books like this didn’t exist when I was a kid. We’re fortunate to have them. Please consider giving one of these books to your children. They can help your kids heal too.

Sincerely yours,

Don Harting
